Vibration is the beginning of everything and sound is just vibration. But when meditated upon, it can become a doorway into the entire Universe. In the yogic traditions, sound has been used everywhere and expounded through the bhakti tradition, starting with the chanting of mantra in temples, classical music being played in royal courts and then ringing out through the streets with folk tunes.

Kīrtan (the practice of devotional chanting/singing) is one of the most well known parts of the Bhakti tradition and is a vast and broad practice that has roots in many regions in South Asia and the practice varies (often greatly) depending on region, religion, language, etc. We will explore the practice of kīrtan through history, theory and practice.
